How to Obtain Your EIN for Free

This is a common question and is a rather simple process that you can do yourself with no cost associated.

First things first, visit IRS.gov. Do not use any other website as there are quite a few sites that will charge you for this.

You are going to then scroll down to the middle of the page and click the blue button that says “Apply for EIN Online.” You can also click the link below.

This service is only available from 7am to 10 pm, Monday – Friday, EST.

The IRS has very clear steps on your eligibility to obtain your EIN. If you do not meet the requirements, you will not be able to use this online service.

You will then choose “Apply Online Now”. Which is a blue button right below this information.

Below the button is a list of other important information. Please note that if the responsible party is an entity with an EIN previously obtained thru the online system you may not be able to use the online application. You also only have 15 minutes to fill out the application. You should decide prior to filling out the application what type of corporation for your entity.

The application will include Name, Address, and Social Security number. At the end of the application, they will ask if you want to print or mail. I personally recommend the print option as you can save it to a PDF and always have access. You should print it later for presentation to banks, etc. I have heard many stories of your EINs being lost and it is not the easiest thing to reobtain as you must know all the given information exactly.
